Braking is one of the most critical function of the car. An average user applies brakes about 200 times in a day. The basic principle is very similar to a bicycle brake where pads rub against wheel rim to create friction. ABS systems are a bit more complicated but have overtaken the basic systems.     Yes rear brakes alone can stop a car bt the distance for braking will increase to more than double as most of the braking is done by front brakes only due to mass transfer
