It’s been a long time since Bugatti set the record for world’s fastest production car with the Veyron in 2010. Since then, the Veyron has reigned supreme over super cars from around the world. Unfortunately, the Veyron has finally been dethroned by an American supercar.

The Hennessey Venom GT is a completely American made supercar which shattered the Bugatti’s record of 268 miles per hour on the 14th of February. Bugatti owners around the world are definitely going to feel a little awkward, especially those who just shelled out $2.4 million dollars for the latest version, the 16.4 Super Sport. The Hennessey achieved a top speed of 270.49 miler per hour at the Kennedy Space Center’s runway, previously used for landing space shuttles. Driver Brian Smith drove the car to it’s limit on the 3.2-mile long runway, shattering Bugatti’s record and taking away the bragging rights of Veyron owners.

The Venom GT has a massive 7-liter V8 made by America’s own General Motors and produces an unbelievable 1,244 horsepower (greater than the Bugatti’s 1,001 hp). 0-60 mph takes only 2.7 seconds while 0-200 mph is achieved in a record-setting 14.51 seconds. But before the Venom GT is immortalized in the Guinness Book of World Records, they have to average a top speed over two runs that beats Bugatti. Smith believes the car can go even faster if it is given a longer length of pavement.

The Venom GT has not only trumped the Bugatti in speed but also on price. Where the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Super Sport costs a whopping $2.4 million, the American supercar costs only half of that at $1.2 million. With less cost and more speed than a Bugatti, the Hennessey Venom GT may just be the best supercar in America and even the world.
