Intel has been investing time and resources to create a 3D scanner that is small enough to be fitted into the bezel of the slimmest tablets and the company is aiming to install the technology in tablets from 2015 onwards. CEO Brian Krzanich told the crowd at MakerCon in New York on Thursday that he has hopes for incorporating this technology into phones as well.

He said, “Our goal is to just have a tablet that you can go out and buy that has this capability. Eventually within two or three years I want to be able to put it on a phone.” Krzanich and some of his colleagues demonstrated the technology, known as RealSense, on stage. The demonstration involved a human model and an assistant who just walked around the model a number of times while pointing the tablet at her. Within minutes, a complete 3D rendering popped up on the screen behind stage. The 3D models obtained can be tweaked and played with via a software or can be sent to a 3D printer as well.Intel Real Sense 3D scanner3 Intel Real Sense 3D scanner4 Intel Real Sense 3D scanner5

Krzanich further said, “The idea is you go out, you see something you like and you just capture it.” He informed that the tablets with built in 3D scanners should hit the market in 3rd or 4th quarter of 2015 while saying that Intel is also working on incorporating this technology into drones.
