Berlin’s Abandoned World War Era Airport Has Been Turned Into The City’s Biggest Park

Time changes everything. As cities expand, and infrastructure deteriorates, we are left with no choice but to construct new communications infrastructures like roads, bridges, flyovers, mass transit systems, railway stations, etc. Same is the case for airports as crowded areas cannot afford to have airports too close to them.

This 80-year-old airport in Berlin was one of the first built solely for commercial purposes in 1927 during the early days of commercial aviation. It is one of the largest buildings ever built and covers an astonishing 300 hectares of area. It was the center of many international events like the Berlin airlift and the iron wall of the Soviet Union. It has seen the highs and lows throughout history as it was the pioneering airport at first and then became one of World’s busiest terminals in between 1950 and 1970. Slowly, time took its toll on the vintage airport and it started declining before getting shut down in 2008.

These early pictures of the airport show the sheer size of the compound.

Now it has been converted into a recreational part by the city administration housing some antique and modern aircrafts in between.

It is a fitting tribute to the pioneering structures of the commercial flying.

Just look at he width of the runway. It would be nice to play football or any other sport over there.

The converted airport also has a host of restaurant and other eateries at attractive locations like the Air Traffic Control Tower and other passenger lounges.
