A New Organ Has Just Been Discovered Inside The Human Body After Centuries

Scientific discoveries never cease to amaze us. You think you have learned all your 78 organs? Think again, as in a stunning medical miracle researchers have found another human organ that had been hiding in plain sight for centuries!

Publication in the journal The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology reveals a previously unclassified organ, the mesentery, which connects the abdomen to the intestine, and was previously described as an unimportant group of structures.

The mesentery is now understood to be a double fold of peritoneum, lining the abdominal cavity and keeping everything in its place.

Researcher J Calvin Coffey, the lead in the discovery wrote,

In the paper, which has been peer reviewed and assessed, we are now saying we have an organ in the body which hasn’t been acknowledged as such to date. The anatomic description that had been laid down over 100 years of anatomy was incorrect. This organ is far from fragmented and complex. It is simply one continuous structure.”

This means that official medical books will now be re-written to include the new organ, which was believed to be fragments of other organs before the groundbreaking discovery. Coffey says that medical students are now being encouraged to start studying the new organ so that we can learn more about its functions, diseases and eventually cures.

He said,

Now we have established anatomy and the structure. The next step is the function. If you understand the function you can identify abnormal function, and then you have disease. Put them all together and you have the field of mesenteric science … the basis for a whole new area of science.”

The discovery now brings the total number of human organs to 79.
