10 Best Gyroscope Modules For Engineers And Hobbyists

Gyro Sensors measure angular velocity and are extensively used in drones, RC helicopters/planes, and robotics. Their high use and relatively low costs as compared to IMU’s make them popular with students, therefore prompted us to make a list of 10 best Gyroscopes for engineers.

10. SeeedStudio – Grove – Single Axis Analog Gyro(13$)

Best Gyro Sensors (5)

This is a single axis gyroscope, which makes its use limited. It might me good for teaching students and beginners, but we do not think you can attach this on complicated projects like drones or RC Helicopters.

9. Kootek GY-521 MPU-6050(4$)

Best Gyro Sensors (4)

At 4$, this is one of the cheapest options for a three-axis gyroscope. Though not explicitly an IMU, it also has a three-axis accelerometer.

8. Gyro Sensor by Olimex(30$)

Best Gyro Sensors (1)

This gyro sensor has very few reviews online, but it is still a good buy. It operates between 2.4 to 3.6V and has three axis.

7. Sparkfun Triple-Axis Digital-Output Gyroscope – ITG-3200(10$)

Best Gyro Sensors (8)

SparkFuns claims on their website that “ITG-3200 is the world’s first single-chip, digital-output, 3-axis MEMS motion processing gyro optimized for gaming, 3D mice, and motion-based remote control applications for Internet-connected Digital TVs and Set Top Boxes.” The gyro has 16bit analog to digital converter and uses I2C protocol to interface with a microcontroller/computer.

6. Diymall® Mpu-9250 9dof Module Nine-axis Attitude Gyro Compass Acceleration Magnetic Field Sensor(12.50$)

Best Gyro Sensors (7)

We did not include this in our ten best lists for IMU’s, but we think as per price and functionality it deserves a spot in our 10 best gyro sensor list. It has all the components of an IMU soldered on the single module but lack filters.

4. SparkFun 6 Degrees of Freedom Breakout – LSM6DS3(20$)

Best Gyro Sensors (10)

This one also has a three-axis accelerometer along with a gyroscope. It has an 8kb FIFO buffer and embedded processing interrupt functions making it powerful enough for the most complex applications as well.

2. G200 Lock Gyro (38$)

Best Gyro Sensors (2)

An ideal fit for RC helicopters. Operates voltage between 4 to 8V and has very high operating speeds. Though expensive at 38$ we still highly recommend this sensor.

1. SparkFun Tri-Axis Gyro Breakout – L3G4200D(50$)

Best Gyro Sensors (9)

One of the best and most robust gyro sensors available. As per Sparkfun’s website “The L3G4200D is a MEMS motion sensor and has a full scale of ±250/±500/±2000 dps and is capable of measuring rates with a user-selectable bandwidth“. These features were the reason this tops our list.
